Themes:¶
Christopher Columbus¶
- Christopher Columbus was Italian
- born in Genoa in 1451
- died 1506 in Valladolid, Spain
He was self-educated
He married a Portuguese noblewoman Filipa Moniz Perestrelo and lived in Lisbon for several years
First voyage¶
In 1492 he took 3 ships from Palos de la Frontera (a port in southern Spain, ~30 miles east of the Portuguese border)
He was sponsored by Isabella of Castile & Ferdinand of Aragon whose marriage in effect formed Spain.
He was looking for sea route to the spices of the East Indies (Philippenes, Indonesia, etc) bypassing the middle-east.
Instead he discovered the New World (landing somewhere in the Bahamas)
- It was Columbus who called the native americans ‘Indians’ - never clear whether or not he fully accepted that his ‘New World’ was not part of the Indies!

The County of Portugal¶

The_Kingdom_of_Portugal¶
In 1128 at Sao Mamede, Afonso Henrique defeated his mother Theresa, who had been set up as Countess of Portugal by King Alfonso VI of Leon. In 1129 Afonso declared himself ‘Prince of Portugal’.
In 1139 (26th July) Afonso declared himself ‘King of Portugal’, accepted as the first stage of Portugal’s independence from Leon.
The second stage was when Alfonso VII of Leon recognized Portugal’s independence in 1143 (5th October).
The third and final stage of Portugal’s independence was when Pope Alexander III recognized Portugal’s independence in a Papal Bull in 1179.
The Portuguese Interregnum¶
In 1383 Ferdinand I of Portugal died without heir. The candidates to succeed Ferdinand were a trio of Johns, two of whom were illegitimate brothers of Ferdinand, the other his son-in-law:
- John of Avis, very popular with the Portuguese middle class
- John of Portugal, another half-brother of Ferdinand but living in Castille at the time.
- John I of Castille, married to Ferdinand’s daughter Beatriz and regent.
Sadly for John of Portugal, John I of Castille had him arrested to get him out of the way - down to two!
In 1385 a huge Castillian army of 32000 men met a small Portuguese army of 6500 at Aljubarrota.
The Portuguese army included a tiny English contingent of about 600, 100 of whom were longbowmen. The English were there because of the existing Anglo-Portuguese_Treaty_ ‘between the seafaring nations’ and because John of Castille was in cahoots with the French and this was at the height of the Hundred Year’s War! John of Gaunt (in his capacity as regent for the young Richard II) was not keen to get involved, but eventually agreed to send this small force.
The Portuguese army was commanded by John of Avis and one Nuno Alvares Pereira, Constable of Portugal.
The Portuguese army (using annihilated their foe, and John of Avis became John I of Portugal.
As a further consequence the Treaty_of_Windsor_ was signed with the English in 1386, which reinforced the existing Anglo-Portuguese_Treaty_ of 1373
The treaty was ‘sealed’ by the marriage of John of Gaunt’s daughter Philippa of Lancaster to John I of Portugal
It remains today as the oldest extant international treaty.
It allowed the UK to use the Azores as a base in both WWII and the 1982 Falklands war!
The Iberian Union¶
Iberian-Union_ - 1580-1640
Consequence of a crisis in Portuguese Succession
Resulted in the whole Iberian Peninsula and all Portuguese territories coming under the power of the Habsburg Philips II, III & IV.
Under Philip IV the Spanish pushed their luck too far, resulting in a Portuguese rebellion and the re-establishment of a separate Portuguese Kingdom under the Braganzas in 1640.
The subsequent Portuguese Restoration war ran from 1640 until the Spanish gave up and recognized Portuguese sovereignty in 1668.
The United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves¶
The Portuguese court had fled to Brazil (first claimed by Portugal in 1500) in 1808 to escape Napoleon. With Napoleon’s defeat in 1815 they were expected to return home, but Prince John (regent whilst his mother Maria I succumbed to dementia) preferred life in Brazil. To enable the family to stay, John had the former colony of Brazil declared a Kingdom and in 1815 the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves was created with its capital in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1820 the peaceful ‘liberal revolution’ in Portugal (which spread from Porto) forced John to return from Brazil. John left Prince Pedro as his regent in Brazil. But the Portuguese Cortes (Parliament) tried to remove the new Brazilian ‘self rule’ status which resulted in Pedro declaring Brazilian independence in 1822 and eventually becoming the first Emperor of the Empire of Brazil in 1825.
